Tim Burton’s Hansel and Gretel was a half-hour short produced for the then fledgling Disney Channel. It was filmed on 16mm with a budget of $100,000. Although it has been included in Burton art exhibits, it was only aired once on Halloween in 1983.
Burton took the original Grimm fairy tale and made it Japanese, with Japanese-American actors and climaxes with a martial arts battle.
According to Russ Fischer at /Film:
”It all caps off a half-hour of entertainment that is a lot like the stuff Burton would eventually make, only in a very abstract way. There are visual trademarks such as whirling spirals, simple monster eyes and sharp teeth. And there is a bit of Kabuki theater colored with a sense of romantic absurdity that points towards Burton’s more polished stuff. “
