According to cNet the return of Cosmos, formerly hosted by Carl Sagan began at a lunch meeting between famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane. It was there that Tyson first suggested a reboot to McFarlane (now an executive producer on the series) who then took the idea to Fox.

The TV.com description of the original Cosmos reads:

“Carl Sagan brings us the Cosmos, everything that ever was and ever will be, in an approach that is easily accessible even for those of us that are not science wizards. This 13 part series covers everything from the history of astronomy, the challenges it faced at its creation, how the universe was created and how it all might end, to the evolution of life on Earth, and the nature of the human brain…”

The new version looks like it will be similar except with new information and vastly expanded visual effects. Here is a peek at the first trailer which was released this weekend at San Diego’s Comic Con.
