Girls Rock Camp

In 2013, Girls Rock Camp Toronto held three sold out camp sessions and had a long waiting list of kids that never got in. Not only should this never happen but the kids should be able to come back every year.

Girls Rock Camp has been one of my favorite things to happen in the last few years. In case you aren’t familiar:

Girls Rock Camp Toronto is a volunteer based organization that builds self esteem through music creation. Female musicians offer music instruction and coach the bands during band practices. We provide a safe space for girls aged 8-16 to learn instruments, write songs, and rock out on stage. No previous music experience is necessary!

In a culture that often has a negative impact on girls body image, self esteem and skills ability, we wanted to create a safe environment for girls to be themselves in every shape and form and to express themselves in the best way we know how… ROCKING OUT!!!

Not only is it good for the kids, but it’s good for the city. You can safely bet that some of the next generation of Toronto musicians will come out of these camps.

Now Girls Rock Camp Toronto is trying to expand out of the summer time and offer an after school program for the 2014-2015 school year. They have launched an IndieGoGo campaign and are seeking just $15,000. In a city of 2.5 million people that is pocket change and the fact that they’ve only raised 1/6th of that amount to date is just sad.
