Deric Lostutter (a.k.a. KYAnonymous) is probably the person most responsible for calling national and international attention to the rape of a teenage girl by Steubenville high school football players. Now, he may be facing up to 10 years in prison for the hacking which unearthed evidence against the rapists.
In an interview with Mother Jones today Lostutter described his motivation for involvement in Anyonymous generally and the Steubenville case specifically, as well as the FBI raid on his home ant the events which followed.
He believes that the FBI investigation was motivated by local officials in Steubenville. “They want to make an example of me, saying, ‘You don’t fucking come after us. Don’t question us.”
If convicted of hacking-related crimes, Lostutter could face up to 10 years behind bars—far more than the one- and two-year sentences doled out to the Steubenville rapists. Defending himself could end up costing a fortune—he’s soliciting donations here. Still, he thinks getting involved was worth it. “I’d do it again,” he says.
According to Atlantic Wire, the convicted rapists Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond may be moved from a juvenile detention center to a privately run rehabilitation center:
“The privately operated center is an open campus where staff members rely on their relationship with residents to prevent escapes…Mays’s attorney, Brian Duncan, told CBS his client was happy about the move: “Our client looks forward to the opportunity to attend the Paint Creek program, follow all the facility rules, and display to the Court and the community that he has been rehabilitated fully in hopes of returning to his family.”
