Episode of the Muppet Show from 1980 featuring the “Stars of Star Wars” (Video)

Given the involvement of Jim Henson and Frank Oz in the Star Wars films, this may have been inevitable. The episode, which originally aired on February 23 1980 features Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and a cameo by Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca).

The show starts with the introduction of Kermit’s special guest star Anus McGonagle, who gargles Gershwin then Luke, C-3PO and R2-D2 break through the wall on a search for Chewbacca. Kermit is thrilled with the new stars until he learns that they can’t and won’t actually be performing. Luke tries to fix things by bringing in his cousin Mark Hamill to sing and dance but Mark is so bad that Kermit won’t let him perform.

Finally, the Star Wars crew joins Pigs in Space because the episode would be a waste if they didn’t. Piggy becomes Lea and they do battle with Gonzo (Dearth Nadir) to rescue Chewbacca.

Now that Disney has the rights to both Star Wars and the Muppets, don’t be surprised if a more elaborate blending of the two pops up at some point.
